GAME SPECIFICS

Game Time

Matches consist of three (3) sets and are played within approximately 40 minutes.

Court Boundaries

Rebound Volleyball is played on a squash court.

The ball is considered out if, while travelling to the opponent's side, it:

  • Hits the ceiling.

  • Hits the opponent's back wall.

  • Contacts two walls before crossing the net.

On your own side of the court, the walls and ceiling may be used to keep the ball in play.

Starting the Game

Captains play Scissors, Paper, Rock.

The winner chooses:

  • First serve, or

  • Which side of the court to start on.

Teams change ends after each set.

Scoring
  • Each set is played to 21 points.

  • Every rally scores a point.

  • The team winning a set receives one match point.

  • The team winning the most sets wins the match.

RULE SPECIFICS

Serving
  • Serves begin on the League Host's whistle.

  • Serves may be overarm or underarm.

  • One foot must remain on or behind the baseline.

  • Players have one serve attempt.

  • The serve may be taken from anywhere along the baseline.

  • The serve may contact the net provided it crosses successfully.

  • The serve may contact one side wall.

  • The serve may not hit the opponent's back wall.

  • Players may not block, spike or attack a serve.

Team Hits

Each team has a maximum of three (3) hits to return the ball.

Players may not:

  • Hit the ball twice consecutively (unless following a block).

  • Kick the ball.

  • Contact the ball below the waist.

If both teams touch the ball during a block, the attacking team still has three available hits.

Net Play
  • The ball may touch the net while crossing.

  • Players may not touch the net during play unless the net is pushed into them by the ball.

  • If the ball becomes trapped between opposing players at the top of the net, play is replayed.

Blocking & Attacking
  • Serves may not be blocked.

  • Sets may not be blocked.

  • Once any part of the ball crosses the vertical plane of the net, either team may play it.

  • Attackers must contact the ball before it has completely crossed the net.

  • A ball struck directly onto the opponent's back wall is out.

  • Both teams simultaneously hold the ball above the net.

Players may not:

  • Carry, scoop or throw the ball.

  • Climb or push off the walls.

  • Use another player for support.

If two teammates contact the ball simultaneously, it counts as one team hit.

PLAYING THE WALLS

This is what makes Rebound Volleyball unique.

On Your Own Side

The ball may:

  • Contact the ceiling.

  • Contact the side walls.

  • Contact the back wall.

provided it remains within your team's three hits.

If the ball contacts multiple walls, another teammate must play it before it crosses the net.

Crossing the Net

When sending the ball to your opponent:

The ball may:

  • Touch one side wall.

The ball may not:

  • Hit the ceiling.

  • Hit the back wall.

  • Contact two walls before crossing.

Rebounding Balls

If a ball spins back onto your side after crossing the net:

  • On your first or second team hit, play continues.

  • On your third hit, the rally is over and the point is lost.

ADDITIONAL URBAN REC RULES

Safe Wall Play

Walls are part of the game.

Players should avoid running through opponents or creating dangerous collisions while chasing rebounding balls.

If safety is compromised, the League Host may stop play.

Net Safety
  • Players must not deliberately pull, lean on or jump into the net.

  • Respect the net and the players on the opposite side.

Calling the Ball
  • Communication is encouraged.

  • Calling "Mine", "Leave", or "Help" helps avoid collisions and makes for better volleyball.

Self-Scoring & Self-Officiating

Some Urban Rec sports rely on self-scoring and self-officiating.

League Hosts may be overseeing multiple courts and may not be able to watch every play or remain courtside for the entire game. Players are therefore expected to:

  • Keep track of their own score.

  • Make honest calls during play.

  • Resolve minor disputes between teams where possible.

  • Submit the final score to the League Host at the end of the game.

League Hosts will watch and assist where possible and have the final say on disputed calls or situations that cannot be resolved between players.

Urban Rec relies on player honesty, good sportsmanship and fair play.

Host Discretion

Not every situation can be covered by the rulebook. League Hosts may intervene where an action is technically legal but clearly unsafe, unfair or against the spirit of the game.

Fun First Policy

All Urban Rec leagues are fun-first, regardless of skill level.

Our League Hosts aim to create a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment by:

  • Coaching where needed

  • Making calls appropriate to the level of play

  • Encouraging communication and sportsmanship

Urban Rec expects a degree of self-officiation. Respect, good vibes and camaraderie go a long way.

Discipline
  • League Hosts have final say on all unresolved issues.

  • If a player is acting disrespectfully or outside the spirit of the game, the Host may:

    • Ask the player to sub off and take a break

    • Issue further warnings

    • Ask the player to leave the court if behaviour continues

We’re here for good times, not bad attitudes. Play fair.

Inclusion

Urban Rec is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants.

  • Gender diverse, transgender and non-binary players are welcome

  • Participants of all sexualities, cultures and backgrounds are supported

Urban Rec has zero tolerance for bullying, discrimination or sexual harassment.
