STARTING PLAY

Team Captains should meet at the beginning of the game for a rock, paper, scissors. The winner shall choose if they want to bat, or bowl first.

CRICKET TERMINOLOGY

  • Over: This is when a bowler bowls 6 balls, there are 10 overs per team.
  • Change of Innings: This is when players change from batting to bowling
  • Stumps: (AKA wickets) Are the three posts sitting at either end of the wicket and must be hit by a bowler or fielder to get a batsman out.
  • Hit Wicket: This is when a batsman knocks over the stumps while playing a shot and results in them being given an out.

BATTING

The batter tries to score runs by hitting the ball when it is bowled to him or her. The batter stands in front of the wicket line.  Once the batter hits the ball and starts running he or she becomes a runner. The batter must make it to the other wicket before the fielding team can get them out. Other ways a batsman can get runs is by making big hits;

  • A SIX and OUT: If the batter hits a ball beyond the marked line on the full, it’s an automatic 6 runs awarded to the batting team. As we are playing Backyard Cricket, this will result to a SIX and OUT in which the batsmen will be out.
  • A FOUR: If the batsman hits the ball and it bounces at least once to the outside of the field markings, its an automatic 4 runs awarded to the batting team.
  • There is no number of wickets i.e. the batting team cannot be all out. Your team keeps going through the batting order until the 10 overs are finished.
  • No player can be dismissed first ball.
  • It’s tip and run which means if you hit the ball you must run. If you choose to hit the ball with your body i.e. pad the ball away, then tip and run applies.
  • The following are the methods of dismissal, (getting out).
    • bowled
    • stumped
    • run out
    • hit wicket
    • Caught – Two hands
    • Caught - one hand one bounce – You cannot juggle the ball between each hand, must be clean.
    • 6 and out
    • Missing 3 fair balls in a row
  • Natural obstacles are in play and will be explained to both teams by the event host prior to the game
  • Your total is the number of runs you have scored at the end of your 10 overs

BATTING RESTRICTIONS

  • The batting order alternates between men and women – at the VERY MOST there can be 2 males in between each female batter if the team does not have enough females to accommodate a 1 female, 1 male batting pattern.
  • The batting order must remain consistent for the duration of the game.  The lone exception is if a player leaves the game.  You can add players after the game has begun.  They will bat at the bottom of the order relative to their gender.
  • RETIRING AT 30: To keep the game fair, and interesting a batsman must retire once they have made 30 runs, without getting out.
  • Getting out may result to a loss of 3 runs. Your event host will make it clear by the start of the game if this applies.

BOWLING

  • When bowling players can bowl overarm or underarm. Bowlers should be conscious of the skill level of the batsman they are bowling against. Balls can bounce twice on the wicket. Bowlers can only bowl one over at a time. There are a min of 5 bowlers in each innings.
  • Each team member must bowl at least 1 over
  • There are six members on the fielding team at any time, the fielding team can sub players in between overs
  • If your team is over 6 members all squad members must bowl.
  • An over is 6 fair balls, in the event of a wide or no-ball the batting team will get one run and 1 extra ball (no free hit)
  • No bouncers (don’t be a dick) balls that are deemed intimidating by the Event Host result in a change of bowler and 6 runs to the batting team
  • The Event Host, at their discretion may choose to shorten the pitch for a bowler that is struggling with the distance of the pitch to make the game more fun and competitive for everyone
  • Bowlers can only bowl off a 3-pace max run up. Players are allowed one ball an over off a long run up.

FIELDING

  • There are 6 players on the bowling team at any time
  • Automatic wicky may be in play depending on the venue, your Event Host will explain this prior to your game
  • All fielders must change their position at the end of each over
  • Extra fielders can be added if both teams have the same number of players and it’s agreed upon prior to the game commencing

WINNING THE GAME

The team with the most runs at the end of the final innings will win the game.  Tie games are allowed.  Extra innings may be added, but not if conditions warrants stoppage of play (safety, sundown). A draw will be awarded if both teams have an equal amount of runs. The winning team receives 3 points, 1 point each for drawn game and no points for a loss. Your Fun Points will affect your position on the standings. If two teams are matched on competition points, the team with the higher fun points rating will be favoured up the ladder.
